All I wanted to do was replace the pcv valve and the grommet.
That didn't take long. Only about an hour. I wound up having to use a screwdriver as a chisel and chisel the rubber grommet out.
That thing was hard hard hard.
Then I wanted to replace spark plugs. Uh huh, yeah right. I got one two three four and six replaced. Easy peasy japanesy.
Number five? No bueno. I can't get the damn boot off the damn plug. Got a pair of those knipex pliers and tried it that way. I quit with that cause it looked like I was tearing the boot.
I'm gonna have to wait on my grandson and see if he can pull it off. I have lost a lot of strength in my hands.
Any way it feels like the rough idle is much better so I'm gonna take it back to smog tomorrow and keep my fingers crossed it passes this time.
Fuck hydrocarbons anyway.
Alcohol and heat... Keep it warm at high idle, don't let sit there, no shutting off and restarting.
ReplyDeleteDenatured alcohol is your friend
Yeah... Sometimes the boot tears. I've had that happen, usually on a car that I bought and replaced existing plugs on. I smear a little silicone grease on the plug insulator to keep that from happening again. 'Not sure if your plug wires snap onto the ends of the plugs or if they're the kind that have boots that go in deep into the valve cover. If you can get to the end of the wire, spray some WD-40 onto the wire and let it run down to the end of the plug boot. Let it sit a while and then start working it with a twisting motion. All you need is for a little of the WD-40 to get under the boot and the twisting motion wil pump it up the side of the plug.
ReplyDeleteYou're lucky you got the PCV valve out of that grommet! What usually happens is you try to pull the valve out of the hardened grommet and it snaps off, the bottom half falling into the top of the head. Now you're pulling off the valve cover to get that out ON TOP of chiseling out the grommet!
