Transmission

I am having some transmission issues. Got a couple of codes, some shuddering issues.

First step for me was to get a trans fluid filter replacement and fluid refill at my oil change place. I figger what the heck, can't hurt, maybe it will help.

I am thinking dirty fluid could cause the problems I am having.

Except they do not do that. Can't afford to stock all the filters they said.

Wait a couple of weeks. Today I called 2 trans repair shops and asked for a quote on a transmission fluid flush with filter replacement. Neither shop will do that. Drain and fill only.

I called a garage and they basically said I was stupid. Not in so many words. He said you do that and you will burn out your transmission, guaranteed. He also said no need to replace the filter, the flush will clean the filter.

So looks like I will have to diy a fluid/filter replacement. I am SO looking forward to laying on that cold hard concrete.

What are your thoughts on this subject???

  1. I was always told to change the fluid and the filter every 100,000 miles. Now that I have 248,000 miles on my F150, I'm glad I did.

  2. I've seen WAAAAY too many things washed loose by" Flushing" to do it without at least 2 fluid changes afterwards.

  3. Found a repair shop that said fill and flush only. Oil Can Henry's charged 4X more for the whole shiteree without filter change. Have been doing fill and flush on all cars for 25 years.

  4. What vehicle and engine trans?

  5. The mileage is one thing to consider, over a 100 without a change many times a change will break up a lot of garbage causing issues,do as another mentioned and do it at least once again.

I had a great guy who rebuilt transmissions for me(miss the days when I could just say tranny!) and he said short of emergency always let car warm up with transmission in neutral about 5 minutes, got the pump going and gave the transmission a chance to wake up as it were.

  6. The theory is that the detergents in the new fluid will somehow break away all the crud in the transmission left by the old fluid. All those deposits leaving will then make your transmission malfunction. This (might have been) been true 50years ago, but no so much today.

In reality, that isn't gonna happen. If the proper operation of your transmission depends on a few thousandths of oxidized oil buildup from the old fluid, then your trans is worn out anyway.

People who really know and work on transmissions will change the fluid every 80-100K miles (unless it has been badly overheated by towing or other abuse, then sooner) and will change the filter as well. If you have an external filter, change that again after about 5000 miles from the time of the fluid change.
Shudder and "Codes" are generally not caused by fluid or filter unless the fluid has been overheated and even then, it's usually internal seals/orings that have been damaged as well if that happens.

    1. Auto trans work through friction and all sliding parts produce particles. The lubricants suffer shear degradation and contamination and may breakdown from heat causing a form of varnish as the additive package breaks down. Your trans has a pickup screen and a spin on filter. You must drop the pan clean the crud out and install the new screen and replace the spin on filter. The new lubricant has to be exactly what the manufacturer requires to provide the correct friction in the clutch packs and other operations functions. The new lube will free up gunk within the fluid passages so changing the spin on filter after 5000 miles will help. Imagine putting new oil through the old filter and screens and releasing all the dormant crud to circulate throughout the internal components. Good way to need a new trans
