I had an uncle who had to resort to stabbing the oil filter to get it off. However, even that didn't work because it ended up tearing the top off of the oil filter. He had to resort to using a hammer and chisel to spin the base off.
I had to do that once on a friend's car because either he or someone else ratcheted that sunuvabich on so tight, using an oil filter wrench just collapsed the shell of the thing!!! Even a chain strap wrench didn't work!!! It just collapsed the thing even more!!!
I too was once inexperienced in the ways of practical mechanics, until my first $200 car, followed by many, many other vehicles of questionable maintenance history. Some have room for filter wrenches, some room for a belt, some like the LS chebbies need the filter socket to get it from below.
Harvey Overtorque can change your plans, as well as too much heat and age. Sometimes you end up with oil in your armpit pounding a screwdriver in, somwtimes it's worse.
I'm still a sucker for deals, couple years ago I bought a couple cracked-frame Silverados for $500 and $600 that run, can't beat that...
If I couldn't get one off with a wrench that is how I usually accomplished it.

I have had to do that in the past, I never put the screwdriver through the oil pan though...

ReplyDeleteDone it a number of times.
ReplyDeleteUsually happens when somebody else tightened the dang thing.
