Tariffs worked quite well prior to 1862 Income tax to PAY for the Civil War (afterwards rescinded) and the 16th amendment in 1913 when income taxes became common use.
ReplyDeleteTariffs kept the federal small. Note the rapid growth of federal government after income taxes started.
Tariffs worked well in this country until the Income Tax Amendment was passed in the early 1910s. The lie of that Amendment was that it would only be used on the rich and a small per centage. That quickly changed and tariffs died.
