Ibuprofen is my Friend.

Yesterday I went crazy. I actually did some work.

Changed the oil in my grandson's truck. He is transferring to germany soon and brought it home to keep here while he is there.

Anyway. I don't have a lift to raise it up or a pit to walk under it. What I do have is a pretty good floor jack. So I raised it up and crawled under it. On the cold hard concrete.

Been tossin and turnin all night,  my lower spine is killing me. Finally gave up the ghost and took 4 ibuprofen about 30 minutes ago, around 4:30 AM.

It seems to be easing up a little.

I decided to do it myself because it costs up to $80 to let someone else change it for you. That's worth it. Except I'm trying to cut my expenses down some. Prices on groceries and gas are sky high here and not looking to come down soon.

I bought valvoline restore and protect 5w-30 oil in a 5 quart bottle. Cost $38.99 for the jug. Now get this. Same oil in a 1 quart bottle is $11.99 per quart. 5 quarts of that is $60.

I have a bunch of oil filters for the truck already, so I didn't have to put out for that this time.

I have watched videos about this particular valvoline oil. They all have good things to say about it, so I am giving it a shot.

What oil do you guys use???

  1. Fred, that oil you suggested, is it good for trucks that are high mileage and older than dirt? What type of oil filter do you use?

    1. This is the first time I have used this oil, and I have high hopes for it. I have watched many videos that all say this is good to clean your engine. So I am going to try it. As for filters, I have a grandson who used to work at o'reillys. They threw out a ton of filters when he was there, so he dug em out of the trash for me. The one I used was a purolator.

  2. I wait until Costco has their full synthetic on sale; around $30 for two 5-qt jugs. Used to be a Fram filter guy until I realized the easy grip wasn't worth the paper guts. Wix makes a good filter.

    1. Wix has just about the best paper filter on the market. Fram is the absolute worst.

I use Castrol High Mileage for all my vehicles because they are... wait for it... high mileage!

However, I use Castrol Syntec in my SHO.

  3. Best oil for running the truck is hands down Penzoil ultra platinum. Lowest coefficient of friction. Leaves a great film for next time you start the truck.

If is is gonna be in storage, then start it once a month and run it around until it is up to operating temp. This is true no matter what oil you use.
If it is real long erm storage (like years), use PRI-G in the gas tank....zero varnish in the carb/fuel injector parts.

But do run it around every month. Seriously.

  4. I used to work for the company that owned Valvoline, I’ve been to and witnessed their oil quality testing, it’s good motor oil, quite good in fact.

  5. I had my GMC pickup oil changed at the local Wal-Mart. Total cost (oil / oil filter) and limited inspection of vehicle, topping off windshield wiper fluid and brake wear, was $56 total. It took about an hour and a half to get through the line, but that was okay by me. I am a Pennzoil high mileage oil fan, and exchange one quart of that oil with 2 pints of STP Oil Treatment.
