Vitamin D Supplements

I have a question about supplements that I hope some of the medical people out there may be able to answer. Cederq, are you there?

How much supplements is too much to take?

For context, a local radio talk show host was talking today about covid and what he is doing to try and stave it off. He takes the following supplements daily: 10000 units of vitamin D, zinc 50 units? mg? in the AM and 50 in the PM, 500 mg of vitamin c AM and 500 in PM.

He takes 2-10 mg daily of famotidine, an ingredient in pepcid.  Also he takes a couple capfuls of elderberry a day.

My wife and I take an elderberry gummy and a vitamin c gummy every night.

Just wondering if taking all of that stuff is okay, or maybe a little too much to be taking???

If anyone has an opinion please share it.

  1. Personally speaking, I find anything over 5000 IU of vitamin D daily hard on my stomach. Your mileage may vary.

  3. John, it depends how much sun exposure you get, if you spend 6 to 8 hrs, you usually receive up to 25,000 IU of UVB radiation in that time. Vitamin D3 is a secosteriod that is produced in the skin but also can be absorbed in your stomach. The literature says 5000 to 50,000 IU can be taken, but some people at the higher dosages have stomach distress or even some studies suggest neurological problems. It can lead to D3 Toxicity. While D3 can increase testosterone level in men with low T3 levels. While I live up in Northern Idaho, I take 4000 IU a day myself. YMMV... You living in Southern California, maybe 2000 or 3000 IU might help?

    1. Clarification: 25,000 IU of D3 by the action of UVB on 7-dehydrocholesterol.

  4. John, another thought, if you take statins, they work by suppressing normal cholesterol production and your brain needs cholesterol, it is it's food and you need cholesterol in production of D3 as well as in use in other bodily functions. Best bet is ask your doctor for his input, he kinda knows you better then any one, one would hope...

    1. Thank you. I have been taking 4 2000 iu pills once every 4 days, with turmeric and fish oil. The radio guy says he takes the pill listed above as his regimen daily to help stave off covid. I wondered if that amount was a little too much to take daily.
