Area Football: Tulia fends off Floydada; Lockney rolls



Tulia held off a late rally by Floydada to pick up the 28-26 non-district football victory on Friday night in Tulia.
The Hornets led 23-7 at halftime but were outscored 19-6 in the second half. A 53-yard touchdown toss from Quincy Gonzales to Dez Wickware in the fourth quarter brought the score to 28-26, but the Whirlwinds’ two-point conversion try was no good, keeping the deficit at two.
Seth Gore recovered Floydada’s onside kick attempt and Tulia ran out the final 3:12 of game time for the win.
Tulia had 383 yards of total offense, picking up 21 first downs along the way. Zachary Hernandez totaled 85 yards on 24 rushing attempts. Hayden Montgomery had five catches for 109 yards and Brayden Franco three for 78. Montgomery and Franco each had touchdowns to their credit. Travon McCaslin was 12-of-20 for 212 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions at quarterback.
AJ Ramirez had two fumble recoveries and returned one for a touchdown for the Tulia defense. Luke Unterkircher had 12 tackles, Franco seven and an interception and Gore 10 and a sack.
Matthew Morales had 126 yards and two touchdowns on 10 rushing attempts to lead the Floydada offensive attack. Gonzales was 6-of-10 for 85 yards, one touchdown and one interception throwing and added 64 yards on the ground. Alexyz Alvarado had 58 rushing yards, Alonzo Ascencio 54, Hermilo Martinez 47 and Andres Mendoza 42. Floydada carved out 420 yards on the ground.
Wickware caught two passes for 53 yards and a score and Mendoza two for 17 yards. Saul Reyes came up with an interception on defense for the Whirlwinds.
LOCKNEY 39, ROPES 14
Lockney rolled to a 39-14 season-opening victory win over Ropes on Friday night.
The Longhorns attempted just one pass on the night, keeping to the ground game.
Anson Rendon had 173 yards on 20 rushing attempts and one touchdown. Nathan Ceniceros had two touchdowns to go with 105 yards on nine carries and Iann Rodriguez totaled 86 yards on 13 attempts.
Josh Cienfuegos had an interception for the Lockney defense. Dex Poole had 10 tackles, Miguel Lara eight and Pablo Morales and Rodriguez each seven. Christian Gonzales and Rodriguez each forced fumbles.
SHALLOWATER 26, No. 6 ABERNATHY 6
Sundown proved too much for the sixth-ranked team in Class 3A Division II Abernathy, handing the Antelopes a 26-6 loss at Shallowater on Friday night.
Shallowater led 20-0 in the second quarter before Abernathy could get on the board. Luke Houston brought in a 24-yard touchdown toss from Jess Hoel for Abernathy’s lone score of the game.
Hoel finished with 172 yards on 12-of-23 passing and added 136 yards on the ground. Houston had seven catches for 117 yards. Matt DeAnda totaled eight tackles and Bradyn Daniel five.
HALE CENTER 32, SEAGRAVES 14
Hale Center got the season started on the right foot by knocking off Seagraves 32-14 on Friday night.
Aurick Rodriguez hauled in six passes for 201 yards and scored three touchdowns. Hunter Thompson was 7-of-21 passing for 270 yards with three TDs and three interceptions. He also ran for another 107 yards and a score. Martin Contreras carved out 102 yards on 14 carries.

  1. Haven't seen scores for these schools in a while. I went to school in Panhandle then finished in Amarillo. Moved away in early 1996. Used to work at the place that processed the game film for all of the schools in the area back before videotape. Made for a long Friday working all day at the TV station, then all night at Film Lab.
