I would agree with him, those three crops will see you through a year or more, you may get tired of eating them, but you wouldn't starve! I would add sunflowers, you can eat the heads and the seeds and you can extract oils from the seeds. Another is finding out what grows naturally around your area that is edible...
agree with the beans and potatos, but for me it would be pintos instead of green beans. nobody in my family likes squash, so it is off the list. number 3 for me would be cabbage. specifically late dutch flat. i have had heads as large as 15 pounds, so it's easy to put up huge amounts of sourkraut and canned cabbage, as well as it keeps in the root cellar very well

pinto beans is what we always ate as kids. No cabbage for us my wife won't eat sauerkraut. My third would probably be tomatoes.
