The Year Without a Summer

Mount Tambora and the Year Without a Summer

How would you like to be going along, minding your own business, and then boom! No summer.

Holy smokes, that would suck wouldn't it?

  1. (Snip) Mount Tambora erupted in 1815, Causing a volcanic winter & a massive famine around the world. To this day it is the most powerful recorded eruption ever. It rated VEI 7 on the Volcano explosivity index, it is widely known as "The Year without a summer"

No waterskiing? How about actual hunger in the lower classes as food priced spiked. Back then police would knock heads of rioters, today we'd celebrate their mostly peaceful protests.

Crop losses were estimated in the 15-30% range globally OR about what the proxy war in the Ukraine is removing from the world's calorie and fertilizer supply this spring.

Not to mention historically low water levels in the Colorado river that supplies power and water to a huge number of farmers and cities.

Might be a "mostly peaceful" summer as cost of everything climbs.

    I'm planting more potatoes :-)

  2. I'm wishing that I had been able to move to a more rural setting before my and my wife's health deteriorated so much. I will have a small garden in my back yard, but I am very limited as to space and security for it. My mind is willing, but my body not so much.

    1. That is the predicament I am in. My garden area at the moment appears to be free of underground varmints, so that is where i will plant potatoes. I have been buying very cheap plastic pots and planting stuff in those. I have about six tomatoes planted in my front flower area.
