No such thing as free. If you don't pay for it someone else has to. Often against their will. You don't even own the land you PAID FOR. Fail to make an accurate on time tax payment and the criminals in government will TAKE your land away from you...at gunpoint if required.
Try buying a kidney... None of those places I would want to live anyway... And aren't the only ones, a lot of small towns in South Dakota offer similar deals about lots for free to build and extra incentive if you have a family. The incentives with school age kids is property tax free for 5 years after you build your house and no hook up charges for utilities.
One of my wife's aunts was 'given' a house through some type of civil charity. Stipulations were (sure not all of them) is that she cannot increase the size of the residence nor have any person renting from her. I'm sure that the same entity that *gave* her the house will get it back once she passes on. So basically, she is renting the house for the rest of her life. I'm pretty sure the property / trailer was taken from another who could not afford to pay the taxes on it.

ReplyDeleteYou are absolutely correct. Also, try selling your kidney sometime.

ReplyDeleteI grew up in a small town just like the ones offering free land. There is a reason they are so small.
DeleteFred, I did too and want to move back to a small community. Small has a quality all to itself.
