The green weenies(back in the day that was the name of a plastic bass fishing worm here in central california) want solar panels and wind energy to be our primary methods of making electricity. Except those are unreliable at best, and don't work efficiently at worst. For centralized energy distribution that is. If you use those methods for your single family home, you will be miles ahead of your neighbors, who will want to come live with you during energy blackout periods.
If you want to help your family and yourself, you should immediately start investing in methods to generate your own electricity for your home and family.
It really isn't that complicated of a thing to do.
