My Search for an Older Truck Has Come to an End

I have been looking for an older pickup, say 1995 or older.

Jesus Christ, these things are expensive.

Check this out on this 1995 Silverado with 73000 miles:

The price for this lovely vehicle is $12,200! HOLY SHIT!

This one is not quite as bad, a 1976 Chevy Cheyenne:

The price for this lovely piece of Americana is $5500!

So, I have decided I will keep the two pickups I have instead of selling them. Now I know certain people do not like Dodge, but I have had several of them and I love them.

I have a 1999 Dodge Dakota club cab, and it has 343,000 miles on it with original 3.9l v6 motor and transmission. No performance issues at this time. I had it up for sale for 2500. Now that price is based upon what I have been seeing on craigslist and facebook marketplace. I had several offers. The best offer I had was 2000, which I agreed to. But then the asshole immediately changed the offer to 1800, so I told them to pound sand.

I also have a 2003 Dodge Dakota 4 door 4.7l v8, with 4x4, at 273,000 miles with original motor and transmission. It still runs pretty good and gets about 15 mpg.

So, my search for an older pickup has come to a halt.

But, I will keep my eyes and ears open for something, you never know what may show up.

  1. It's frikkin' insane out there right now. So glad I got my 89 Silverado when I did.
I saw an early 80's Chevy 4X4 that looked real clean at a local wrecking yard called All American Classics for three grand the other day.
I just saw it while driving by. It probably needs an engine or transmission but at three grand it would be worth buying and doing easily.
The thing was all clean, shiny and original looking.
Might be something to look into, buying what they call a Builder from a wrecking yard. That's where I got that El Camino I had for six years, after I had the transmission rebuilt it was the most reliable rig I have ever owned out of all sixty plus of them.

    1. Yeah, it's crazy. All I want is a beater to drive around, something I know how to work on. I haven't seen any yet that look good with no motor or trans. My grandson has a 76 dodge sitting in my driveway with no motor or trans. We have the motor my other grandson is going to rebuild. If we ever get it going I might just drive that one. Until he takes it to alaska. There is a 1987 el camino in morro bay the guy wants 6250 reduced from 8250.

  3. When I took my sojourn down to Arkansas a couple of months ago and stayed for two months I came across a 2012 Short box, single cab with a V6 at a used car dealer. It was a fleet vehicle with 171,000 miles on it, very clean, Kelly listed it in excellent condition for 9500. They were asking 17,950 for it. I told them no way I was paying almost double for a 9 year old truck with that mileage. I drove by the next day and it was gone... I hope whomever got it likes those payments.

  4. I have a 1984 or 5 Dakota that just sits around...long story. I put a new battery in it this year but it wouldn't run until I poured gas into the throttle body. Any ideas? Fuel filter or pump? Where is the pump?

    1. Not 100% sure but I believe the fuel filter is part of the pump assembly, and I think that may be in the gas tank. If it runs by pouring fuel into the throttle body, then fuel delivery appears to be the issue. if the pump works check the injector system.

  5. Given a choice, I'd seriously look at the '76...much less computerized and less susceptible to an EMP...still, it's a Chevy...stock up on dist caps, rotor, points/condenser, extra carb, water pump, alternator, and starter.
