I guess for some, the consolation that "at least I know I'm free" (even though a complete and total LIE) is enough to get them through. It wasn't true when the song was written (ironically in 1984), and it isn't true today. Sure, if you want to compare us to Venezuela, but on EVERY measure of freedom (political, economic, personal, etc.) the US is far from the top of EVERY list.
