How to Cook Without Electricity

When the electricity goes out due to Hurricane Ian, will you be able to cook??

Or it goes out for any reason I guess.

Now me, I don't cook. But I can open a mean can of beans lemme tell ya. If my wife doesn't cook for me then I fend for myself. And that almost always means no cooking.

Open the beans, pour in the pot, turn on the electric burner, and heat till edible. Cut up an all beef frankfurter and throw in for good measure. That is the extent of my cooking.

Oh, and I cut a quarter of a whole onion to go on the side. If I have any leftover biscuits, those are luxury.

Occasionally my wife will say, stir this for me while I do this other thing over here. And I will stand there and stir until she says Why are you still stirring? And I say Huh??

  1. I keep a couple of 1-burner camping stoves handy, and a six-pack of propane. Gives me a 2-burner stove, so I can make the coffee and cook up a meal. Also hot water to shave or use for a sponge-bath.

    1. I only have one of those. I think my next prep will be another one burner stove, a six pack of the propane, and another percolator to replace the one I somehow got a hole in.

  2. Been living in my recently purchased, five year old van, for two months now.

And have purchased the following: single burner propane stove. A classic, mini aluminum, stove top espresso thingy. A mid size aluminum percolator. A large stainless percolator. A large whistling tea kettle. A passive (ceramic/Fwance) filter holder (been even looking at Keurig's and power inverters).

But I have yet to make one single durn cup of coffee.

Easier to just go through the drive through at Mickey D's

  3. Shoot, I even bought a classic glass liner vacuum thermos. AND a large stainless, double wall carafe. One of these days I'm going to climb that morning coffee mountain!

    1. You know, mickey d makes a darn good cup of coffee. But there is something to be said for just not driving anywhere and having a cup or two before heading out. Keurig may be your answer for that.

  5. I learnt to 'almost' cook in self-defence, being on my own in out of the way places most of the time.

Whilst definitely no 'Gordon Blue' I have one of those Origo stove top "ovens". I've made bread, and even pizza. Easy to use, light and surprisingly effective.

I still use the Dutch Ovens on the fire for my 'peace duh resistance' (recipe courtesy of a period 'observing' SADF a few decades ago*) .... beer-bread (just use beer instead of water, and no yeast or baking powder required) - alcoholic bread, what could be better?

[*Supplies were choppered in to us on patrol daily. A pallet of ammo, another of food, one of water, and ... two of beer. Those boys had their priorities right].

But yeh, at home I seem to default to some variety of beans and X too. I suspect it may be hard-wired into the Y chromosome.
